Gospel of Identity (2022 - ongoing)
The black body exists. Lost underneath the pressure of the forces it continuous to strive, nonetheless. Fuelled by the bond of skin, strengthened, and liberated in the joy of being, we long for connection amongst the community and within ourselves. What was once hidden in a haze of oppression and fear can now be illuminated.
Then to be seen is the ultimate form of resistance.
In his latest work, Moses Omeogo explores the question of Afro-German identity. As the son of a German mother and an African father, he has always been confronted with questions about identity, origin and belonging. In order to investigate these impulses, Moses embarks on a search for other people from the Afro-German diaspora. In preparation for intensive photographic portraits, he exchanges experiences and thoughts with his protagonists in a series of conversations and discovers similarities and differences. Moses Omeogo captures these intimate encounters and the complex experiences of his subjects in sensitive portraits that confront the viewer with a direct gaze. Within this sensitivity lies a collective strength, a multi-layered momentum of our time, which makes it clear: “We are here!”.
